What is QUICK START?

Problems and Opportunities

  • We’re doing well in Youth EE, but can get better

  • Not getting as many new churches implementing

  • It’s a “hard sell” and perceived as a complicated program. Many reluctant to commit to 13 weeks

  • We find young people struggling to learn the Gospel more than even a few years ago

  • There are 92 points to the Youth Gospel presentation (more than the Adult EE outline)

Problem: Out of a class of 20 students …

  • 5 will drop out before 13 weeks

  • 15 will stay the course and learn the material … of those 15 …

  • 5 will complete the semester but will never return

  • 5 will return but will require at least another semester as a trainer

  • Of the 20, 5 will complete the training and move on to be a trainer in the next semester

How Do Students Learn Today?

  • Young people are not as used to a linear-progressive style of learning material, memorization from A to Z, as they used to be

  • Educational techniques today emphasize a more interactive style of teaching. That’s how students are used to learning in the classroom

  • Therefore students are more “hands on” in the learning process.

  • Yet in the past Youth EE has not emphasized that type of teaching as much as we should

Therefore, in general there is a lack of enthusiasm because:

  • They don’t see results in their own life soon enough to get their attention

  • Too much time between starting and seeing personal success

  • They’re too intimidated to begin sharing the Gospel

  • Feel overwhelmed by the complexity and commitment involved

The Results?

  • Many get discouraged as the semester progresses, feeling that they can't meet the standards

  • They drop out, or even if they stay the course, many leave discouraged and never return as trainers

  • Easy to point out problems, how about some solutions?

In Youth EE we have begun a program that attempts to address these problems

Here’s how we’re trying to address them …

QUICK START

  • Instead of a 13-week commitment we ask for 6 weeks.

  • We teach a shorter, much more easy-to-learn Gospel presentation

  • We emphasize a “ Zoom ” approach, learning the basics first, then later zooming in on more detailed learning

  • We minimize our lecturing in class and emphasize a more interactive, hands on approach to teaching

  • We do OJT five of six nights (Note: OJT is On-The-Job Training. We take students out on real life witnessing situations

What does the presentation look like?

  • Brief introduction, shortened testimony, and 2 diagnostic questions

  • Five points of the Gospel

  • 2 sub points for each part, one story and one scripture

  • Commitment

The Training Sessions

  • Lots of interaction…FUN!
  • Short lectures, lots of stop and practice
  • PowerPoint, visual aids, hand outs, video clips

The heart of the matter: sharing the Gospel through the telling of stories

  • We have one story for each of the 5 main points of the Gospel.

  • We teach simple transitions that move from one section to the next.

  • Each story we use is already being used in the full Gospel presentation. In fact, there is nothing taught that does not already exist in the full presentation.

  • On OJT, we share the Gospel only using the simpler presentation.

What results have we seen from our field-testing?

  • Because only a 6-week commitment is required, more students sign on

  • The drop out rate is lessened

  • Students are less intimidated in learning the briefer outline

  • Because each section is little more than telling a story, students are much more willing to begin sharing on OJT

  • Because they can master the outline much earlier… they have “success” much earlier

  • Because of that, they are less discouraged and more likely to return for the next semester

What happens after the first 6 weeks?

  • We invite them to come back and “learn more”, zooming in on more details

  • How they can add to the outline to make it even better

  • Then we teach the remainder of normal full 13-week semester materials in the second 6 weeks

  • Certification as a Trainer, etc. returns to “normal” after the second semester
